Climate change has become a major factor influencing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters throughout the world. Global warming, caused by increased greenhouse gas emissions, has caused various environmental changes that have a major impact on natural disasters. One of the main impacts of climate change is an increase in global temperatures. Higher temperatures contribute to the melting of polar ice, which has a direct impact on sea level rise. This increase increases the risk of flooding in coastal areas, threatening ecosystems and human populations. Small countries and densely populated areas are especially vulnerable to these disasters. Changes in rainfall patterns are also the result of climate change. In many areas, rains have become more extreme, causing flash floods that damage infrastructure, agriculture and people’s lives. On the other hand, several areas experienced a decrease in rainfall, resulting in prolonged drought. This drought impacts water supplies and food security, causing a prolonged crisis for populations dependent on agriculture. Weather-related disasters such as tropical storms and typhoons are also becoming stronger due to climate change. Higher ocean temperatures provide more energy for storms, making them more fierce. Stronger storms bring strong winds, extreme rainfall, and more damage to the areas they pass through. Events like these affect millions of people, destroying homes, infrastructure and resources. Climate change also exacerbates the risk of forest fires. Hotter temperatures and longer dry seasons create ideal conditions for forest fires to occur. These fires not only damage ecosystems and cause biodiversity loss, but also burden public health by increasing air quality and carbon emissions. Apart from direct impacts, climate change also causes indirect impacts such as population migration. People living in areas affected by natural disasters, either directly or as a result of environmental damage, are forced to move to safer areas. This triggers resource conflicts and social challenges. Mitigating the impact of climate change as a cause of natural disasters requires strong global cooperation and collective action. Efforts such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing community preparedness, and developing disaster-resilient infrastructure are becoming increasingly important. Apart from that, public education and awareness about climate change and natural disasters is very necessary to minimize existing risks. Recognizing the link between climate change and global natural disasters is the first step to facing future challenges. With real action and commitment from all levels of society, we can reduce the impact of disasters caused by climate change and protect future generations.
